A mini list of great Tamil historical novels

July 18th, 2006 · 107 Comments · Books

I’ve talked a little about Tamil historical novels in my previous two posts. Below is a small list of the best novels that I’ve read and enjoyed immensely, and would gladly recommend to anyone.

Sandilyan:

As mentioned in my earlier posts, his best works are

  • Kadal Pura
  • Yavana Rani
  • Raja Mudhirai

He wrote quite a few historical novels. From memory, the following ones are also good, though not as great as the above three

  • Moongil Kottai
  • Vijayamahadevi
  • Jala Deepam

Kalki:

These are the best of his works (I’m not sure how many he wrote)

  • Sivakamiyin Sapatham
  • Ponniyin Selvan
  • Parthiban Kanavu

Akilan:

I’ve read only Vengaiyin Maindhan, not sure how many he wrote. This is a very good novel.

There it is, my list of great historical novels in Tamil. Anyone wants to add more?

Kannadasan had written Cheramaan Kadhali and oomaiyan kottai.

Cheramaan Kadhali won the sahitya academy award when it was published.

  • 2 vijay // Oct 6, 2006 at 4:27 pm

Yeah, i have read cheramaan kadhali, not sure if the author is kannadasan. Do you know if there is an audio version of these books? I’d love to team up with interested people and make audio versions.

There aren’t good tamil historical novels these days. It would be great to have another Kalki or Sandilyan or Akilan in the tamil literary world, sigh….

    Thanks for the comment Yogalakshmi.

  • 20 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 8:36 am

I dont think Sandilyan’s novels r available online..lists r avilable..i read thro his Yavana Rani..its about a queen from rome/greek came to Poompuhar to establish their throne here in India. The story happened at the time of Karikala Chola. The hero is his Commander Ilanchezhiyan. I am very much inspired by the plans of ilanchezhiyan in escaping from his exile to Rome. A very good novel..I admire Sandilyan’s ways of making scenes with secrecy..can any one tell me about kadal pura?????

  • 21 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 8:39 am

    Akilan’s historical novels are
    1)Vengayin Maindhan
    2)Vettri Thirunagar (Krishnadeva Raya Reign)
    3)Kayal Vizhi

  • 22 vijay // Jan 9, 2008 at 8:42 am

    Thank you for your comments.

Narmadha: Yup, Sandilyan is quite amazing. Yavana Rani is one of his best works. Kadal pura is even better, in my opinion :-) you should definitely read it. Especially the third part, where Ilaya pallavan defeats a big navy, with a fleet of just half a dozen battleships. Sandilyan’s imagination is amazing :-)
Also read Raja mudhirai. Its AWESOME :-)

  • 23 vijay // Jan 9, 2008 at 8:45 am

I’ve read Vengaiyin Maindhan, its quite good. Akilan’s style is more like Kalki’s, than Sandilyan’s. Will have to read kayal vizhi and vettri thirunagar, thank you Narmadha, for suggesting them.

  • 24 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 11:32 am

can any one tell me about Chitra paavai of Akhilan? Is it a historical novel?
Murali,Sandilyan’s Kadal pura was earlier available in http://www.ammas.com/topics/History/a110209.html
but i couldnt access it now..plz check thro it.

  • 25 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 11:34 am

    Raja muthirai,Mannan magal,Pallava Thilakam,KanniMaadam,Cheran Selvi..
    these are Sandilyan’s works..
    Are these historical novels?
Has any one read thro these?

  • 26 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 11:37 am

I am one among the ppl who admire on Vengayin Maindhan, but got disappointed with kayalvizhi and Vettri thirunagar..
I didnt find the flow to be that much interesting..
can any one tell me what is present name pazhayaarai?

  • 27 Narmadha // Jan 9, 2008 at 11:44 am

I ve also read Pandyan Bhavani of Sandilyan. In it he has specified about Neela Valli. Both reg to Parandhaga Pandyan..Neela valli is his wife, also known as Pandimaadevi/Vanavanmadevi.There is work by Naa.Parthasarathy titled Pandimaadevi abt her..Its not that much interesting..but ppl interested in knowning tamil history can read thro it..

  • 28 vijay // Jan 9, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Thanks for taking time to comment, Narmadha :-)
No, Chithira paavai is not a historical novel, just checked with mom. I haven’t read it though.

Raja muthirai,Mannan magal,Pallava Thilakam,KanniMaadam,Cheran Selvi - all of these are historical novels and I’ve read them. Amongst these, Raja muthirai is the best, others are just average.

No idea about the present name of Pazhayaarai :-(
I remember reading Pandiyan bhavani, but can’t recollect it at the moment. Sandilyan has written so many historical novels, but not all of them are good. In fact, some of them are really bad. But the good ones, they’re just toooooooooooo good :-)

  • 29 Narmadha // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:17 am

great then..any idea about works of Vembu vikiraman.
i ve started reading kadal pura..i expect it in the same way as yavana rani..will finish n give my comments..
i am interested in visiting historical places..
i ve been to Kodumpaalur..i could see only muvar kovil (pathiyilarrku pathi scene) there..no other remains..

  • 30 vijay // Jan 10, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I’m sure you’ll love kadal pura. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Wow, you went to kodumpaalur?

  • 32 vijay // Jan 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

A BIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGG thanks to all of you who took time to read the blog and comment. I’m so happy to find so many people who’re interested in Tamil historical novels. A lot of initiatives are going on, to digitize books - both commercial (like google books) and open source (like project gutenberg). It would be awesome if we could do a similar project for Indian language books. There are amazing authors in Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali… If we could digitize their books, it would be a treasure house.

  • 33 sabapathy // Jan 22, 2008 at 7:38 am

Pazhairai is still known as pazhairai only. It is near kumbakonam.

  • 55 Ilangovan M // Apr 9, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Hi Folks, This is excellent form for like minded folks to talk about historical tamil novels. I have read almost all or most of Sandilyan’s novels and that of Kalki’s. I see few questions and discussions here and I try to say few words.
    1. Kalki’s novels are made free to all by govt (Arasudamai!). So that is why you can find free copies in the net. Where as Sandilyan’s novels are still copyrighted (mostly by Vanathi pathippakam) and hence not available.

    2. Don’t look for historical proof for fictional characters, like ‘Nandhini’ in ponniyin serlvan. Kalki himself declared she is fictional. Just read the ending part of the novel where he says who are all fictional.

    3. Whatever historical evidence found so for leads to chera-pandiya alliance as the plotters to kill Aathithya cholar”. Check http://www.varalaaru.com (Few novels are there too)

    4. Coming to Sandilyan’s novels.
Kadal pura - the best from Sandilyan, based on the historical event of how Chola’s captured the Srivijayam. (Current singapore, malasiya area)
Yavana Rani - The next best. Karikal chola time and how with the help of neduncheziyan, his commander, Karikalar comes to power. Excellent Romance also there.
    Another good one is
Mannan magal - Based on the historical event of Rajendra cholza’s army went up to Himalayas.
A fictional character as hero, with other real historical characters. Very nice to read.
Raja Perikai - is another interesting novel explains how England started to capture Indian places and how French narrowly missed the oppurtunity.
Manjal Aaru - explains how Mokalaya’s entered India through Gori who was defeated few times by Mewar’s Rana and finally defeated the Rana (with the help of Rana’s brothers and some commanders).
Raja Thilakam, Raja muththirai, Jala theepam, Mungil Kottai, kanni maadam, malai arasi, Raja yokam, Raja Sirpi etc.. are other novels by Sandilyan.

Kalki’s major are ‘Ponniyin selvan’ - how Rajaraj chola comes to power.
‘Sivakamiyin Sapatham’ - Why and how NArasimma pallava burnt the Vathapi.
‘Parthipan Kanavu’ - A dream of chola’s prince under Narasimma pallava.

For many more Tamil literature works and some novels, try ProjectMadurai. Just google you can get.

I see here that lots of people from within Tamil nadu asking for Sandilyan books download. Common guys, you can buy them there. It is not that costly. (If you stop watching 3 stupid tamil movies, you can get a good historical novel!!).
For those who are abroad and can not get those books easily, downloads are good. Otherwise if we can, we should buy them. That is the right thing to do. (Almost all the sandilyan books I have referred, I have a collection at home).

That’s all for now. Any doubt in these novels I will try to answer.

Hai Narmadha: u asked about Kadal pura its one of my favorite story in this story kadal pura means hero designed and built a ship like pigeon structure with wings at side and pigeon head shape at front the main thing about this pigeon shape is how a pigeon dive down to catch its food like that ship’s front slantly goes into sea that enemies think that ship will sunk but at a second again ship comes up and start fighting.this make enemies to confuse for sometimes.i u get chance to read kadal pura dont miss it

Chitralega - Please do not misguide people. Athitha Karikalan’s death was not known and recorded as who killed him. That is the reason Kalki made it complex - involving many characters around him during Karikalan’s death and at the end of his novel he also mentioned that he also doesnt know who killed him and might be the Pandiyas “Abaththuthavigal” who did the revenge for killing their king Veera Pandiyan and shamed him by cutting his head and the king was not given proper respect. That action of Karikala was not liked even by the chola army. There is a book on this topic “Who killed Athitha Karikala” - i didnt remember the author and publisher. Dont blame Arulmozhi - if he killed his brother then why he allowed his uncle (younger than Arulmozhi) - Utham Chola to rule the kingdom for nearly 20 years. Think twice before posting anything which u dont know.

    Chitralega,

Yes, I too agree with Annamalai. Arulmozhi (Raja Raja Cholan)’s one of the famous character is giving his crown to Uthama chola. If he really thought to capture the crown, he could have never given kingship to Uthama chola. Only Nandhini is a fictional character in “Ponniyin Selvan”. Ravidhasan and Aapathuthavigal are not fictional. If you search on history, Raja Raja cholan’s first action as a King is, punish the criminal’s of his brother’s death. Raja Raja Chola is one of the greatest kings in the Tamil history.
